Our Race SLO ambassadors share their stories about motivation, determination, endurance and growth to inspire us and remind us that we are on this journey together.
In 2015, the Hoka One One Northern Arizona Elite runner Stephanie Bruce won the SLO Half Marathon, racing while 5 months pregnant with her second child. Her husband, also a professional for NAZ Elite, won the men’s race that same year (and again in 2017).
This year, Bruces are returning to Endurance Town USA for the SLO’s largest running festival, the SLO Marathon, Half Marathon, Relays & 5K, April 28-29, 2018.
After becoming a mother of two boys, Stephanie returned to racing in 2016. She talked to Arizona Daily Sun about the experience.
At first, the “mom” years of her career did not sit well with her; she felt like there was an asterisk placed with her achievements that marked the post-children years. Now she’s come to embrace the new era, to feed of the many sacrifices she has to make in order to be a professional runner.
“If I am going to leave my kids and go race, when it gets really painful on in the race, it’s like, ‘Well, you left your kids,’ so there is this part of me that is able to change my thinking, and I am able to go to like a deeper, darker place than maybe before I had kids,” Bruce said. (You can read the rest of the article in Arizona Daily Sun.)
As to how Bruces keep up with parenthood, training and coaching, here is a sneak peek into their day with toddlers. You can find out more on their website Running With the Bruces.
