The San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half Marathon and Relay Races, presented by Pacific Premier Bank, is proud to announce Robyn Schmidt will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, April 29, 2018… during our awards ceremony.
Robyn Schmidt started a Youth Cross Country program in Atascadero in 2009 with just a half a dozen athletes, and successfully grew it into an official Atascadero Junior High School running program with 50 participants, preparing students for high-school running.
Two years ago, Atascadero Senior High Cross Country Head Coach Roger Warnes observed Schmidt’s coaching talent and brought her in as an assistant coach for distance running and track. In the two years since Robyn joined the coaching staff at the senior high, the Greyhounds have been to two CIF finals, both the boys’ and the girls’ teams. Says Warnes, “Robyn continues to run well, inspiring runners of all ages. Her enthusiasm for the sport is contagious. I can’t think of a better choice for the 2018 SLO Marathon Hall of Fame.”
Robyn Schmidt also serves as the Race Director of the locally famous All Comers Track Meet, which has attracted Olympics hopefuls as well as local standouts and kids running their first race. What lights Robyn’s fire is watching kids who enter the sport without a clue, then hit their stride and find their own love for running. She’s watched kids from the 6-and-under age group show up year after year at the All-Comers Meet, and grow up to excel in high school and college athletics.
An All-American runner and national champion at Cal Poly, Robyn qualified for the 1984 Summer Olympics. Her blazing PR in the marathon is 2:37, a time that would have set a world record as late as 1976.
Robyn will join the SLO Marathon Hall of Fame inductees Joe Rubio (2017), Sean Ricketts and Dr. Paul Spangler (2016), Stan Rosenfield (2015), Roger Warnes (2014), Greg Hinds (2013), and Pete Dorn and Brian Waterbury (2012).
The induction ceremony will take place as part of the awards ceremony on Sunday, April 29, beginning at 10:45am on the grounds of the Madonna Inn.
Additional award categories include cash prizes to Overall Female and Male Winners, Military and First Responders, Challenged Athletes, Race SLO Legacy Award, First Place Relay Teams, as well as Age Group Divisions. All race finishers will receive a collectible medal with a unique design.
